  • Decay - Volume 01
Decay was developed as an artists’ resource collection containing grungy and distressed textural images for design application. The presentation of the book was meant to portray a certain cyberpunkish feeling through techy shapes and negative impressions of rusted metal elements. A bright-yellow and black color scheme was utilized due to its association with hazard signs, warning stripes, and other cautionary indicators.

  • Gochisou Japanese Dining
The Gochisou brand was developed to be a sleek, contemporary Japanese restaurant; parting with the old-fashioned aesthetics that are ubiquitous amongst many Asian dining establishments. Instead, traditional elements and norms were to be re-imagined in a fashion befitting the twenty-first century.

The name Gochisou is derived from the Japanese custom of giving thanks before and after a meal. Before dining, the expression ”itadakimasu” is spoken – meaning ”I humbly receive.” After completing one’s meal, the phrase ”gochisousama-deshita” is used – meaning ”it was a feast.” In less formal occasions this may be shortened to ”gochisousama” or simply ”gochisou.” Whilst speaking these thanks the hands are placed flat together and a seated bow is made.

  • NEA - Print PSA
The goal was to create a powerful and original public service announcement campaign for the National Endowment for the Arts in order to promote support for local liberal arts programs. The ad would have to be bold enough to immediately draw attention and include a powerful emotional impact.

Throughout the series a wooden drawing mannequin has been placed in a number of dire situations – as though the lack of support has forced him into a life on the streets. The imagery is shocking enough to catch the eye while possessing a certain dark humor that makes the message memorable.

  • Altra Crane and Lift
Logo and comprehensive identity system for crane and lift services.

A clean, corporate, but strong and reliable look was needed for Altra – a crane and lift contracting corporation offering everything from construction services to rentals and maintenance. Due to the nature of Altra’s specialty, the brand had to evoke a feeling of fortitude and the muscle to get tough jobs done; while at the same time it was important to consider the presence of the company not only on the job site, but in the boardroom as well.

“Altra” is an invented word, brought about through creative brainstorming processes including the generation and combining of random phonemes. Altra was selected for its straightforward simplicity and its similarity to the words “ultra”, “alternative”, and “Atlas.”

  • Rampant Pinot Noir
Rampant Pinot Noir is an exercise in minimal, sophisticated packaging design. The goal was to create an edgy and youthful brand of fine wine, drawing upon classical heraldry and stylizing it to appeal to a young and urbane demographic.

The lion-rampant emblem is based on traditional portrayals of the beast: with clean, contemporary lines and sharp, aggressive points. The high-energy, high-contrast yellow on black ensures that the bottles will stand out on any shelf.

  • The Five Dysfunctions
This experimental cover redesign takes a textural, typographical approach to expressing the chaos and confusion caused by dysfunctional business practices. While the original cover suffered from a non-descript appearance and the use of vague photography, this new concept aims to make the book stand out whilst remaining appropriate to the content within.

  • Essai Publication Cover
Each year, the College of DuPage puts out a collection of outstanding student and faculty writing across all disciplines. This publication is readily available within the college library and is a popular item amongst English composition and literature professors. The cover is to appeal to the student body while retaining a sense of sophistication and higher learning. This concept is meant to associate a certain sublime and enlightening feeling with the act of writing.

  • DuPage Opera Theatre
This series of six posters is an experimental personal project based on my love for opera and classical music, as well as my interest in the geometric style of the Deco-era. The goal was to express a key event, concept, or image from each opera in a simple-but-attractive aesthetic that would conform to the tall, skinny space provided.

  • Grün - The Gardener
Grün is an up-and-coming personal illustration endeavor based on a random character image created in 2008. The project will revolve around Grün and his garden sanctuary set within a fantastical world largely inspired by Germanic and Tolkienesque lore. The aim is to create a comprehensive and colorful setting for the character with additional flourishes of dark humor using methods similar to concept art development for the entertainment industry.

  • Xenos - 3D Test
While exploring the capabilities of various design and illustration software, some time was spent experimenting with Z-Brush by Pixologic. This mesh was created whilst learning the basics of the program and is intended to be a part of my personal Xenos project. The alien concept was created to be a part of a desert-dwelling civilization and takes cues from Middle Eastern facial traits as well as those of reptiles native to arid climates. It was sculpted from a plain sphere and is rendered at approximately 1.5 million polygons.
